Man detained for defrauding restaurants
    2021-06-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN surnamed Cai was detained by Longgang police for racketeering and defrauding two Haidilao restaurants in Shenzhen, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Cai had a hot pot at a Haidilao restaurant in Longgang District at 12 p.m. May 17. Around half hour later, he made a phone call and walked out of the restaurant without paying his bill. After walking around the store, he went back to the seat, looking around nervously.

After eating for 10 minutes, Cai asked a waiter to come. He took a cockroach out of the soup. The serviceman apologized immediately and the restaurant manager promised to make an investigation. However, Cai claimed that he was going to make a complaint.

As they didn’t reach an agreement, the store finally offered Cai a free meal and a compensation of 1,000 yuan (US$156).

The incident led to Haidilao’s self-examination of the whole process from the food supply, processing to serving. No food security problem was found to exist.

At the night of the same day, Cai “found” the same problem at another Haidilao outlet in Longhua District. Cai got 800 yuan as compensation for this meal.

Haidilao spotted something was wrong and reported to the police.

Longgang police reviewed the stores’ surveillance video, confirming that it is Cai who put the cockroach into the hot pot. With the adequate proof, the police put him under administrative detention.

Cai admitted that he was engaged in the catering industry previously, knowing that the restaurants would give a free meal if the guests found foreign objects, such as insects, in the meals. So, before he headed to Longgang’s Haidilao, Cai held a cockroach in his hand and deliberately put it in the soup.

The same racketeering was done in Longhua’s Haidilao.

Longgang police explained that Cai has violated China’s public security administration punishments law.
