Smart cameras used to deter e-bikes from entering elevators
    2021-06-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Yantian division of the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau has installed smart cameras in five elevators at the Haitao Footbridge. The cameras can automatically identify and give alarms to refuse e-bikes from entering, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

Quite some citizens have praised such a move targeting the hidden safety hazards of e-bikes, which are prone to suddenly burst into flames in a confined space.

Some citizens urged that the system should be promoted across the city. According to these citizens, e-bikes are frequently seen entering the elevators at the Tianmian Footbridge on Shennan Boulevard in Futian District and those at the footbridge on Chuangye Road in Nanshan District.

The reporter with the Daily visited the footbridge on Chuangye Road on Tuesday noon. Most of the citizens consciously abided by the rules and pushed their bikes through the slopes to get on the footbridge.

However, a few citizens carried their e-bikes in and out of the elevators, ignoring the eye-catching signs at the entrance of the elevators, which read that bikes and e-bikes are forbidden to enter.

According to the Daily, the elevators at Tianmian Footbridge have been temporarily closed.

According to a sign posted at the door of the elevators, relevant management departments are maintaining the elevators in order to prevent safety problems after receiving repeated reports from citizens about e-bikes in elevators.

It is reported that the smart cameras installed in the elevators at Haitao Footbridge in Yantian can automatically recognize e-bikes and issue warnings.

Meanwhile, the smart cameras are connected to the elevator’s control system and can order the elevators not to close the door.

The system, which operates 24 hours, is also able to identify baby strollers, wheelchairs and bicycles to avoid giving false alarms.
