UK passport approved for Kanneh-Mason
    2021-06-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BRITAIN’S Passport Office has sensationally reversed the decision to refuse a passport to superstar cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. The decision came a few hours after a message on his Facebook page went viral, generating numerous comments from the music community.

A source close to the cellist revealed to The Strad: “With all of the high-profile comments, the Passport Office finally direct-messaged Sheku on Twitter. Early this evening they reissued the passport and couriered it over to his flat.”

On June 10, the U.K. Home Office canceled a new passport for Kanneh-Mason when the first Black winner of the BBC Young Musician award in 2016 tried to apply for a second one.

Kanneh-Mason, 22, who was born and raised in Nottingham and appeared alongside his siblings on ITV’s variety show “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2015, then posted the issue on his Facebook account. A Home Office spokesperson then said it had been an error and pledged to issue a replacement as soon as possible.

Kanneh-Mason, whose father is Antiguan and mother is from Sierra Leone, played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. He signed a major recording contract with the music label Decca Classics in 2016.

Kanneh-Mason has won the classical category of the South Bank Sky Arts awards, the Male Artist of the Year and the Critics’ Choice award at the Classic Brit awards, and was made an MBE in the 2020 New Year honors for services to music.
