GENOME sequencing showed that Shenzhen’s local confirmed COVID-19 case reported Monday has the Delta variant, a highly transmissible COVID-19 variant first identified in India and currently sweeping across the world, the city’s health commission said yesterday.

The other three confirmed cases reported earlier in the city since June 14 were also caused by the Delta variant, Chang Juping, deputy director of the commission, said at a press conference held by the Information Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Government at the Civic Center in Futian District yesterday.

The four patients carry the same virus variant as the 38 imported cases on board the inbound flight CA868 from South Africa.

The city reported no new local cases yesterday. At present, the epidemiological investigation of the latest COVID case reported Monday, a 64-year-old woman surnamed Liu, is in progress. Liu tested positive for COVID-19 on June 20 during a mass screening in Xiashiwei Village in Fuyong Subdistrict, Bao’an District. Liu had tested negative in four previous nucleic acid tests.

Liu worked part-time at a Sichuan cuisine restaurant between June 14 and 20 and accompanied her husband who is being hospitalized in Bao’an People’s Hospital. This was the second confirmed case in three days in Fuyong.

Liu’s 18 close contacts and 101 sub-close contacts had been identified as of Monday, who are all under centralized medical quarantine with negative nucleic acid test results.

The schedule of the senior high school entrance exam, also known as zhongkao, will remain unchanged, Wang Shuifa, deputy head of the municipal education bureau, said at the conference. The exam is slated to take place between Saturday and Monday.

According to Wang, all zhongkao takers and their family members who live with them, as well as the proctors, should take nucleic acid tests within seven days prior to the exam and have their health monitored. Meanwhile, all proctors should complete vaccinations.

Hu Zhaoyang, executive deputy head of Yantian District, said that no new COVID-19 cases have been found in the district for 21 consecutive days. Lockdowns on the 12 housing compounds and areas related to the COVID-19 case reported May 21 have been lifted.

Chen Biao, executive deputy general manager of Yantian International Container Terminals, said the operation capacity of the port area has steadily picked up.

“At present, there are 11 berths in operation, processing 27,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers per day,” said Chen, adding that the terminals are expected to regain normal operation capacity tomorrow.

At a news conference Monday, Xu Zhongping, deputy chief of the city’s transport bureau, said there will be fewer trains and flights between Shenzhen and other cities and reminded travelers to check real-time status of their flights or trains.

Some online ticket sales platforms yesterday showed that direct flights between Shenzhen and Beijing scheduled for yesterday and today were canceled. Direct trains between the two cities were also canceled yesterday and the number for today and tomorrow has been reduced. Flights and trains between Shenzhen and Shanghai and Chengdu were also reduced.
