City keeps a close eye on activities of Bryde’s whale
    2021-07-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN’S marine departments and scientific research institutes have been keeping a close eye on the activities of a Bryde’s whale since it was seen foraging in the waters in Dapeng Bay on June 29.

Compared to the previous few days, the whale’s activities decreased significantly Monday morning and it became active again in the afternoon, Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday. Monday marked the seventh day that the rare marine visitor showed up in Dapeng Bay.

At present, scientific research teams from several top marine biology research departments in China have successfully recorded an abundance of scientific research information through continuous monitoring, which is believed to help gather more valuable information for the domestic research of cetaceans.

After coming under the spotlight during the weekend, the Bryde’s whale is said to have begun keeping a “low profile.”

According to the staff of relevant departments who monitor at area, the whale’s activities had declined drastically since Sunday afternoon and it hunted for food only four times Monday morning. From 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, the whale appeared again offshore near Shayuchong with increased predatory frequency.

Some citizens who had been watching the whale on the shore speculated that after a week of “binge eating,” the shoal of fish in the Shayuchong sea area has been almost “wiped out” by the Bryde’s whale.

However, marine biology experts believe that due to the lack of previous research materials, it is too early to jump to conclusions regarding the many behaviors exhibited by the Bryde’s whale and further observation is necessary.

In order to cope with the coming summer travel season and the possible impact of typhoon weather on the Bryde’s whale, a joint working group on whale and dolphin protection has been set up in Dapeng New Area to strengthen the observation of the whale in an all-round way, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily said yesterday.

Will more whales become regular visitors to Dapeng Bay after the Bryde’s whale appearance?

According to An Ran, an expert with the China Development Institute, the apperance of whales can be said to be inevitable since Shenzhen has made great efforts to protect and repair the ecological environment of its whole eastern sea area in recent years.

Chen Mo, an expert on cetacean research and an associate researcher with the Guangxi Academy of Social Sciences, believes that if a large number of cetaceans gather in Dapeng Bay and continue to appear steadily, it shows that Shenzhen has made landmark progress in the governance and restoration of its marine ecological environment.
