A MAN doing greening work surnamed Wang was bit in the abdomen by a 12-centimeter centipede in Julongshan Park in Pingshan District recently. A doctor from a Pingshan hospital suggested the injured seek medical help in hospital instead of giving personal treatment, sznews.com reported yesterday. The bite was red and swelling, and Wang even felt it burning. In his quest to get rid of the wound immediately, Wang intended to use cupping to remove the toxins; however, the red and swollen area was spreading. Wang then sought treatment at Kengzi Hospital of Shenzhen Pingle Orthopaedic Hospital in Pingshan. The doctor then cleaned the wound, detoxified it and gave him anti-allergy treatments. Wang later left the hospital after some observation. An emergency department doctor at the hospital urged people who get bitten by a snake or a centipede not to suck the toxins out by mouth. These bites pose great infection risk like blood poisoning. Clean the wound with clean water to reduce the toxins on the skin and seek treatment at hospital as soon as possible. The doctor also reminded citizens to avoid walking in grassy and shrubby areas where centipedes might hide in. Bites from small centipedes rarely cause major symptoms, but bites from larger ones might cause headaches, fever, respiratory paralysis, or even coma or death. In these instances, people should quickly seek medical help, according to the doctor’s suggestion. (Chen Siqi) |
