Man rescues driver trapped in flooded car
    2021-08-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A VIDEO showing a man rescuing a driver stuck in a car at Fulong Road on Sunday has spread widely on the internet. The rescuer, Huang Ke, has been found by a reporter of Shenzhen Evening News who interviewed him by phone.

As the city was hit by heavy rains and floods Sunday, a number of cars were trapped in flooded roads such as the Ganzhou-Shenzhen Railway section of Fulong Road, the intersection on Renmin Road and the intersection on Jianshang Road.

One white car got stranded and broke down during this ordeal; its driver could not get out because the vehicle was already submerged in the water. While he was waiting for help, a stranger reached out to him and rescued him from the car. The stranger, later found to be Huang Ke, works in Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital.

Huang told the reporter that his car was also trapped when he headed to Longhua District on Sunday. He spotted a driver of a stranded vehicle could not get out of his car. “I was not hesitant to walk to the car after checking my surroundings,” said Huang.

At first, Huang tried to rescue the trapped driver using an umbrella to smash the car’s window, but it didn’t work – water already reached the driver’s waist by then. Luckily, the car’s rear windows could be opened, and Huang helped the driver get out from those windows. “I am going to get you, don’t worry. You can make it,” Huang said and the driver was finally rescued.

Shenzhen traffic police, firefighters and emergency staffers responded to the scene and brought the trapped driver to a safe place later on. And Huang was soaked at that time.

Many people have given a thumbs-up to Huang’s courageous action. “I was impressed by Henan people’s bravery in the recent disaster. I believe that many people will act like me when they face the same situations,” said Huang.  (Xia Yuanjie)
