Meituan’s drone delivery gets off the ground in SZ
    2021-08-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINESE internet giant Meituan’s self-developed drone delivery system has been applied in real life scenarios in Shenzhen, with these drones providing users real-time service, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

Meituan has begun exploring the drone delivery service in 2017 and has built a drone base in Longhua District as a test site for commercial trial operations.

During a field visit to the drone base, a reporter with the Daily ordered six cups of bubble tea on the Meituan app. After the bubble tea was made, a Meituan deliveryman took the tea, sent it to the drone take-off and landing point on the mall’s top floor and loaded it into the meal boxes of two drones.

The shopping mall where the bubble tea shop is located is about 1.3 kilometers away from the base. As there is a school between the base and the shopping mall, the drones had to make a detour to avoid flying over the school as per relevant requirements.

The drones took three minutes and 49 seconds to deliver the bubble tea from the shopping mall to Meituan’s drone base in Longhua, according to the Daily report.

Since the first delivery order for real users was completed in Shenzhen at the beginning of this year, Meituan has carried out more of its drone delivery service commercial trial operations in Pingshan and Longgang districts. As of this June, Meituan’s drones had completed over 2,500 orders, the company said.

According to sources from Meituan, the trial operation of its drone delivery service in Shenzhen has benefited from the city’s complete industrial chain and policy support.

Chu Zheng, head of Meituan’s drone operations, told the Daily that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the research and development of the company’s unmanned delivery system and they will also consider contactless delivery as a service option.

“Shenzhen has very good conditions [for the trial operations] and perfect traffic planning. Its citizens abide by rules and the city encourages innovation,” Xia Huaxia, Meituan’s chief scientist, was quoted as saying in a previous interview with the Daily, when discussing why the company piloted drone delivery in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen, known as the capital of drones, boasts a complete drone industry chain and a number of well-known drone makers such as DJI.

In 2013, Shenzhen formulated a development plan for its aerospace industry, in which priority is given to develop drones and related industries. The city has also introduced a series of measures to better regulate drones.
