Guoan enters championship stage, Shenhua falls into relegation zone
    2021-08-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BEIJING Guoan beat Shanghai Shenhua 4-2 in the last game of the 2021 Chinese Super League’s (CSL) first phase Sunday to enter the league’s championship stage, along with Changchun Yatai, Shanghai Port and Hebei FC from the Suzhou Division.

In the league’s Guangzhou Division, Shandong Taishan, Guangzhou FC, Shenzhen FC and Guangzhou City all secured safe passage to the championship stage.

Facing old rival Shanghai Shenhua, Beijing Guoan had to win in order to progress to the championship stage.

Zhang Yuning broke the deadlock for Guoan in the seventh minute after taking advantage of a poor clearance to slot home with a low shot.

Five minutes later, Zhang Xizhe made it 2-0 when he calmly converted a penalty awarded after a foul by Shenhua goalkeeper Li Shuai.

Shenhua’s nightmare continued in the 16th minute when defender Matej Jonjic conceded an own goal, but Cao Yunding pulled one back for Shenhua to make it 3-1 to Guoan at half-time.

Shenhua dominated the second half, but wasted chances, and Zhang scored his second and Guoan’s fourth goal in the 81st minute after beating Li in an one-on-one situation.

Yu Hanchao scored a late consolation goal for Shenhua just before the final whistle, but the result condemned the Shanghai side to battle against relegation in the CSL’s second phase.

The victory pushed Guoan to third place in the Suzhou Division ahead of Hebei, which finished fourth following a 2-2 draw with Wuhan.

In the other two CSL games played Sunday, Changchun Yatai defeated Dalian Pro 3-1 to finish top of the Suzhou Division ahead of Shanghai Port, which finished second after smashing Tianjin JMT 5-0. (Xinhua)
