MORE than 140 enterprises, organizations, citizens and projects were awarded for their active participation in the 18th Shenzhen Project Care, a citywide campaign dedicated to helping the needy and the disadvantaged.

After a series of procedures and final reviews, 10 citizens and 10 enterprises were rated as the top 10 caring people and top 10 caring enterprises of Shenzhen Project Care. Shenzhen Longyue Charity Foundation and nine other organizations were rated as top 10 public welfare organizations. The Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission was named “Facilitator of the Year.”

Two events were named “annual caring events,” including Shenzhen’s discovery and report of the first COVID-19 case outside of Hubei Province, which provided critical evidence of the human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus.

Ten projects were rated as top 10 creative projects and another 100 projects, including the one involving building Shenzhen into a waste-free city, were named the top 100 projects with most citizen satisfaction.

Wu Ruizhou and Peng Yina were among Shenzhen Project Care’s commended individuals. Wu taught himself painting and started from scratch. After his career took off, he invested all his property and led his children to establish a public welfare art school.

Over the past 20 years, Wu has cultivated more than 200 disabled people to learn skills and regain self-confidence.

Peng, the granddaughter of renowned revolutionary leader Peng Pai, and her mother Chen Ping set up a special fund which raised a total of 4 million yuan (US$617,200) for a reading promotion project in poverty-stricken areas.

The project has helped 160 rural schools build 1,342 reading rooms and donated 139,900 books, benefiting nearly 100,000 children.

Among the awarded organizations, Shenzhen Longyue Charity Foundation has launched caring projects for war veterans and martyrs’ parents and other related endeavors. Another organization, Shenzhen Youyou Volunteer for Edu-Aid has been focusing on children’s education in mountainous areas and helped 8,051 needy students over the past 13 years.

The Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, named “Facilitator of the Year,” was recognized for organizing 60,000 medical workers to fight on the front lines against COVID-19 and safeguarding people’s health with practical actions.
