Global immersive VR films shown at Yealife
    2021-08-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The Cannes XR, a program dedicated to immersive entertainment at the Cannes Film Festival, is joining hands with the global virtual reality (VR) content community VeeR to show 10 VR films at Yealife in Nanshan District.

Wearing VR goggles and sitting in 360-degree rotating egg-chairs, audience members can watch different genre films from documentary to animation to digital art. Launched in 2019, the Cannes XR program will certainly revolutionize the art of storytelling in the film industry.

It takes three hours for audience members to watch all of the 10 films, which are “Ecosphere — Raja Ampat” (Australia), “Symphony” (Spain), “See You Yesterday” (China) and “Strands of Mind” (Germany) in the 360 VR section, “Beat” (Japan), “Biolum” (France, Germany), “Samsara, Ep. 1” (China), “The Hangman at Home” (Denmark, France, Canada) and “Under the Pillow: Kitten Mormitten” (Russia, Estonia, Belarus) in the Interactive VR section and “1st Step” (Germany) in the Special Screening section.

Films in the 360 VR section are made with 3DoF (degrees of freedom), meaning that your experience is governed by rotational movements. Films in the Interactive VR section are made with 6DoF which means that your experience in VR will be extended to include translational movements.

Among the 10 films, the story of the Apollo missions, “1st Step,” won much acclaim. Based on NASA’s data and photos sent back by the Apollo 17 mission, this film in 360-degree stereo recreates the details of the moon landing with 3D-modeling technology, and took the VeeR Future Award at the Cannes XR competition last year.

In “Beat,” viewers encounter a rusted robot, absolutely static. It is a story in which you can understand the power of the heart and the importance of emotional connection with others.

With “Symphony,” audience members will have the chance to experience music from within an orchestra. Under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel and performed by the internationally acclaimed Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the concert features masterpieces by Beethoven, Bernstein and Mahler.

Dates: Until Sept. 16

Hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Tickets: 88 yuan (two 360 VR films + one Interactive VR film), 198 yuan for adults (all films), 128 yuan for students (all films)
