A TOTAL of 100 residential communities and 10 superintendents were rewarded for their outstanding achievements in garbage sorting, it was announced at an award ceremony Friday.

Shenzhen officially started a selection to reward the top 100 residential communities and top 10 superintendents regarding their contributions to waste classification June 23.

As of July 30, the application deadline, 453 residential communities across the city had submitted their application forms with evidence proving their garbage sorting efforts, according to the city’s urban management authority.

The top 100 residential communities were finally decided from the final 125 residential communities after the first round of selection and field inspections conducted by the city’s urban management authority.

The top 10 superintendents are from residential communities in Futian, Luohu, Nanshan, Bao’an, Longhua and Pingshan districts, according to the selection result.

Meilinyicun in Futian District, one of the top 100 residential communities, formed a supervisory team comprised of 193 members of the Communist Party of China and 42 cleaners who work in tandem to achieve above 98 percent garbage-sorting accuracy rate in their community.

Dongmen Community in Luohu District, another winning residential community, has distributed over 5,500 publicity materials to its citizens and conducted 10 lectures on garbage sorting.

Shenzhen has implemented mandatory trash-sorting rules since Sept. 1 last year.
