Driver fired after speeding at intersection
    2021-08-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A BUS driver has been fired by his employer after he was found to have failed to slow down at an intersection in Longgang District last week.

A video showing the bus “drifting” at the intersection of Longgang Boulevard and Tunfu Road sparked heated debate among netizens recently, DT News reported. The police started investigating the incident after receiving reports from netizens Aug. 23.

The video showed the bus didn’t slow down at the pedestrian crossing and was drifting along the way. It was even precariously close to rolling over, making many netizens feel anxious that the bus may actually roll over on pedestrians. “It was too dangerous,” one netizen commented after watching the footage.

The police announced Thursday that the bus driver has been found and is under police investigation. The police announced again yesterday that after checking the vehicle’s dash cam footage, they found that the bus was driving at a speed of 57 kilometers per hour when it turned at the intersection.

Under China’s Regulations on the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law, a motor vehicle driver shall not drive at a speed of more than 30 kilometers per hour when making turns on the road.

A judicial appraisal will be carried out to see at what speed the bus driver was driving at the time of the “drifting” incident, the police said.

If the result shows that the speed exceeds the limit by more than 50 percent, but less than 100 percent, the driver will have 12 penalty points added to his driver’s license and face a fine of 1,000 yuan (US$155). His driver’s license will also be downgraded.
