SHENZHEN traffic police will launch an action on drivers who honk illegally.

The action will target six violations, one of which is honking more than twice in a row, for longer than one second at a time.

Drivers will be fined for using a horn that is over 115 decibels while in congested traffic to rush pedestrians at crosswalks or vehicles ahead of them; or for honking to summon others, while waiting in residential areas, hospitals or schools.

Drivers violating rules in nonhonking zones will be given a verbal warning or be fined 300 yuan (US$46.49). Drivers will be fined 500 yuan from the third offense if they violate the rules for more than three times in a year.

Data in the last three years showed most honking violations were found along Bao’an Boulevard, Xinghai Boulevard, Honghu Road West, Danzi Boulevard, Longgang Boulevard, Yueliangwan Boulevard, Shennan Boulevard, Mawan Boulevard, Luosha Road and Chunfeng Road.

Police inspections will focus more on heavy vehicles like dump trucks since they have received the most public complaints on honking.

Heavy vehicle drivers violating more than two times will be blacklisted.

Police have installed sound navigation and ranging system on some roads with high heavy-vehicle traffic to simultaneously detect sounds from a 50-meter distance and photograph the honking offenders.
