Crab harvest season

THIS year’s harvest season for China’s highly sought-after freshwater crabs began on Wednesday in the Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province.

A total of 10,940 tons of the tasty and pricey mitten crabs are expected to be harvested and hit the market starting around the National Day Holiday in early October.

The crabs will be collected from a breeding area that covers around 5,900 hectares, according to the municipal agriculture and rural affairs bureau.

Jiuzhaigou to reopen

JIUZHAIGOU, a famous scenic spot in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, will fully reopen to visitors Sept. 28. It is over three years after a powerful earthquake hit it, local authorities said Thursday.

The quality of the scenery at Jiuzhaigou has been restored to pre-earthquake levels, and infrastructure at the site has improved, said Yan Sashuang, deputy head of the local culture and tourism department.

The scenic spot has undergone comprehensive disaster assessment since the restoration and has been closely monitoring and managing all locations with high risks for geological hazards, said the site administration.

28 new local cases

THE Chinese mainland Wednesday reported 28 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the National Health Commission said in its daily report Thursday.

Of the new local cases, 20 were reported in Fujian and the other eight were reported in Heilongjiang.

Also reported were 15 new imported cases, with five in Yunnan, three in Tianjin, two each in Shanghai, Hubei and Guangdong, and one in Liaoning, the commission said.

Medical employees fined

TWO medical employees were fined 500 yuan (US$77) each for publicly releasing the personal information of coronavirus patients and their close contacts, the Putian goverment in Fujian Province said Wednesday.

Private information leaked online includes their ID numbers, phone numbers, addresses and recent whereabouts.

An investigation found that two people forwarded the information from their workplace chat groups to public chat groups.
