Sichuan mudslide

FOUR people had been rescued yesterday while several others remain missing after a mudslide hit Tianquan County, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Saturday, local authorities said.

According to the emergency management headquarters in Tianquan, two of those rescued were slightly injured and one showed no signs of life. The other person was stable at the time of rescue.

Suicide attack

A SUICIDE car bomb, which exploded near the presidential palace in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday, has killed at least seven people. The Islamist militant group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack targeted a convoy heading towards the presidential palace as it waited at a busy checkpoint.

Genocide ‘kingpin’

A FORMER Rwandan army colonel convicted for his role in the massacre of some 800,000 people in the 1994 genocide has died in Mali, where he was in prison.

Theoneste Bagosora, 80, was a senior figure in Rwanda’s ministry of defense at the time of the killings. His son Achille said Saturday he died at a hospital in Bamako, where he was being treated for heart issues. A U.N.-backed criminal tribunal sentenced him to life in prison, but this was later reduced to 35 years.
