Two new ‘Nine-Tiered Pagoda’ exhibitions open
    2021-09-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Two new exhibitions of the Pingshan Art Musuem’s “Nine-Tiered Pagoda” project have opened recently.

‘Mask and Shadow — Solo Exhibition of Xie Nanxing’

As the seventh exhibition of the project, “Mask and Shadow” resembles a transparent castle, attracting visitors to pick up the key to solve the puzzles in art, architecture and design. The exhibition is based on a series of portraits drawn by Xie Nanxing, with architect He Jianxiang designing the exhibition space and graphic designer Ma Shirui in charge of poster and other visual designs.

Xie’s way of expression is completely different from traditional “portraits” as he reflects one’s emotions, morality and mental states with their social identity and personal experience rather than just their appearances.

‘Scene of Feelings — Jiang Jie, Peng Wei, Yin Xiuzhen’

As the eighth exhibition of the project, “Scene of Feelings” explores the individual consciousness and identity differences in art, architecture and design. The exhibition is based on the works of three female artists: Jiang Jie, Peng Wei and Yin Xiuzhen, with architect Xu Tiantian designing the exhibition space and graphic designer Xiao Mage in charge of posters and other visual designs.

Pajamas, mirrors, xanthium and fish nets are the subjects in Jiang’s works; Peng paints on bust models and inside shoes; and Yin uses cement to create an installation for the exhibition.

The “Nine-Tiered Pagoda” project, launched last year by curator Cui Cancan and architect Liu Xiaodu (Pingshan Art Museum’s director), is a hands-on project that mixes ideas, methodologies and tools. They invited nine groups of artists, nine architects and nine designers to form nine temporary teams to create art. Now eight exhibitions of the project’s results are being presented at the art museum.

The curator, artists and architects believe that each tier of a pagoda tells a story. The stories, spaces and designs are closely intertwined with each other into a superimposed whole, becoming the spiritual core of the exhibitions. The architects and artists in the project grant the exhibitions a myriad of variables and possibilities for visitors to explore.

Meanwhile, exhibitions “Perspectival Playground — Solo Exhibition of Yung Ho Chang” and “Xue Feng: Far Far” are also being held at the art museum.

The five installations in architect Yung Ho Chang’s “Looking For” series present a brief history of perspective (a way of representing shapes and volumes in architecture). At the exhibition, visitors can look at the one-point perspective created by architect Andrea Palladio in the 16th century and the complicated experience of abstract urban spaces in current times. Visitors can also find the perspective relationship between windows, rooms and furniture in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Rear Window.”

The painting exhibition by Xue Feng is the first exhibition of the Pingshan Art Museum’s “Shenzhen Contemporary Artists Series” project.

The ending dates for all the exhibitions have not yet been set.
