HEAVY rains and gale winds brought by Typhoon Lionrock basically came to an end yesterday. However, Typhoon Kompasu and cold front from the north will further bring rains to Shenzhen starting tomorrow, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

Typhoon Kompasu, this year’s 18th typhoon, is expected to enter the South China Sea tonight and is likely to pass over sea 250 and 450 kilometers south of the city between tomorrow night and Wednesday.

Along with the cold front, there will be heavy rains and strong winds between tomorrow and Thursday. Maximum wind gusts in some areas in the city might reach levels 10 to 12, said the observatory.

It is said that the rainfall impact caused by Lionrock is greater than Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018, ranking second since 2008.

According to the observatory, the city’s average rainfall from 8 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. yesterday was 291.4 millimeters.

At the same time, the heavy showers and downpours left a total of 12 people trapped in a factory in Longgang and a rental house in Dapeng.

Firemen successfully rescued these trapped residents after receiving calls for help, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Though there might be another rainfall before late October, the city will see less rain when winter starts, the Daily report said. The city’s water authority thus urged citizens to save water.
