SZ urges waste reduction along with sorting
    2021-10-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THOUGH Shenzhen has achieved positive results since implementing garbage classification regulations last year, it is still necessary to notice the increasing amount of garbage, the city’s political advisers said at a themed meeting Saturday.

Wang Xue, a political adviser and a professor from Shenzhen Polytechnic, underscored the importance of both garbage classification and waste reduction at the meeting, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

Last year, Shenzhen produced 29,000 tons of garbage and this year, it went up to 34,000 tons.

The meeting also suggested that urban villages and office buildings performed the worst in garbage sorting and that some more citizens need to increase their waste classification awareness.

Political adviser Xiao Youmei proposed to combine citizens’ garbage sorting behaviors with the personal credit system to punish those who fail to sort garbage.

In terms of waste reduction, Xiao advised to create a waste account for each family to charge fees by the number of plastic bags they discard.

Wang urged manufacturers to also take a responsibility by recycling packages and components such as drinking bottles and electric vehicle batteries.

In addition, technologies like artificial intelligence were advised to be used to promote garbage sorting.

Political adviser Guo Wei from Yantian District suggested using devices with infrared sensors for hands-free untying of garbage bags while disposing kitchen waste.

Guo also advised that facial recognition equipment be placed at garbage collection sites to record residents’ behaviors. (Wang Jingli)
