THE finals of the First China AI Innovation and Application Competition will be held in Longhua District, Shenzhen, on Nov. 7 and 8, the organizers announced at a press conference held at the Civic Center in Futian District on Friday.

Hundreds of finalists will compete for awards Nov. 7, and winners will be awarded prizes that are capped at 1 million yuan (US$155,000) Nov. 8.

As of Tuesday, the competition had attracted over 7,000 competitors from all over the country since it started Aug. 13. Approximately 25 percent of the participants are from Guangdong Province. Among them, nearly one-third hail from Shenzhen.

The thematic contest is revolved around eight events, including AI city transportation, AI robotics, AI calculations, industrial intelligence, and 5G+AI network application. Nearly 5,000 contestants participated in four events hosted by Shenzhen.

At Friday's press conference, Yu Xiaohui, director of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), said China’s AI industry is characterized by a continuously expanding AI core industry and the deepening integration of the technology with the real economy. The competition aims to meet a growing demand for AI talents, with a focus on the construction of an open AI ecosystem.

Yu Xiquan, head of Shenzhen’s industry and information technology bureau, said the city’s AI industry has a variety of AI application scenarios and a booming consumption need.

Wang Wei, Party chief of Longhua, said digital economy has contributed to more than 50 percent of the district’s GDP, which boasts 317 AI-related companies.

The district is a core area for the AI industry in Guangdong Province and a high-end manufacturing base for Shenzhen’s AI industry, he said.

The industry scale of China’s AI industry reached approximately US$43.4 billion in 2020, according to a report by the CAICT in July. The data also showed that the industry scale of the global AI industry grew by 12 percent year on year to US$156.5 billion in 2020, while China witnessed an annual growth of 15 percent.

Shenzhen, home to some of China’s biggest tech giants including Tencent and Huawei, designated AI as one of the main technology areas it wants to advance in the next five years.

Shenzhen’s AI industry ranks third nationally, behind Beijing and Shanghai, in terms of current capability and future development potential of AI, according to a report published by Nanfang Daily in December 2019.
