Two exhibitions at Jupiter Museum of Art
    2021-12-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Huang Rui

Huang Rui, one of China’s most influential contemporary artists and a founder of the “Stars Art Exhibition” and the 798 Art District, is exhibiting his artworks at a solo exhibition.

Born in Beijing in 1952, Huang is a founder of the avant-garde art group, the Stars, which was active from 1979 to 1983. At a time when there was no contemporary art displayed in mainstream museums in China, Huang was among the few who launched the outdoor “Stars Art Exhibition” in 1979. After spending 14 years in Japan, Huang returned to Beijing in the 1990s and became one of the initiators of the 798 Art District, which has since become a symbol of the success of contemporary art in China.

Early on, Huang mostly created paintings that referenced various Western artistic styles such as Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Fauvism and Cubism. As his style developed, he became more experimental and began exploring different mediums including photography, printmaking, installation art and performance art.

Huang’s works are characterized by simplicity of form, as well as by the use of primary colors. His works stand alone as aesthetically pleasing; however, he is recognized as being a socially minded artist.

Once earning a living by making portraits on the streets of Beijing, Liu not only honed his painting skills, but also learned to observe people from different walks of life and feel social transformations. The experiences of being a street artist enriched his mind and heart, as he developed a unique visual vocabulary. He creates a fantasy world in which he utilizes vivid colors to express urban dwellers’ happiness, confusions, illusions and psychological battles.
