Chinese pianist Sheng Yuan who is renowned for his rendition of Bach pieces will play the composer’s two legendary works, “The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 903” and “The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988.” A wizard on the keyboard, Bach pushed the tonal boundaries of the Baroque period. “The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue” is a work for harpsichord composed from 1717 to 1723. The piece was already regarded as a unique masterpiece during Bach’s lifetime. “The Goldberg Variations” is a composition consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations. After transforming the music over the course of an hour, using different time signatures, textures and harmonies, the beautiful first aria returns, with a completely different feel from the first hearing. Once the listener has heard the tune transformed in almost uncountable ways, the simplicity of the original music is nothing short of arresting. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music in the United States, Sheng studied with pianist Rosalyn Tureck and now teaches at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
