The dance drama “Guardians of Red Boat” depicting Wang Huiwu (1898-1993), who helped her husband Li Da in preparation for the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1921, will soon be staged in Shenzhen. A native of Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province, Wang worked as a secretary for the Shanghai Women’s Association in 1920 and married Li, one of the founders of the CPC, in April 1921. In preparation for the First National Congress of the CPC in July 1921, the couple selected a traditional Shanghai brick-and-wood house as its venue. After being spied on, in August Wang suggested the delegates move to a boat on Nanhu Lake in her hometown Jiaxing to continue the meeting. Co-produced by the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater and the Communication University of Zhejiang, the dance centers on how Wang, prudent, resourceful and quick-witted, contributes to making sure the congress is held in spite of all odds. Taking the audience through the memory of the glorious red history and revisiting the “Red Boat” spirit, it highlights the pioneering work, striving spirit and dedication of the CPC.
