The first 4K Cantonese opera movie “White Snake,” centering on a snake spirit transforming into a beautiful woman and falling in love with a man, was a hit in China last year, and soon the opera will be staged in town. Based on “The Legend of the White Snake,” one of the four major Chinese folk legends, the Cantonese opera will be performed by Zeng Xiaomin, Zhu Hongxing and Wen Ruqing, the three leads in the film. Like the film version, the opera is visually scrumptious and dreamlike; the imagery captures the characteristics of Chinese landscape paintings; sword fights and battles become elaborate rhythmic sequences mixing martial arts and operatic interpretive dance. “White Snake” is a thousand-year-old story that transcends time and place. Zeng, who plays the White Snake Bai Suzhen, is the president of the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe, as well as a winner of the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award, China’s top award for drama.
