THE first gigabit ultra-remote sea and land trunk line of China’s offshore oil fields using microwave communication was officially put into use recently, the Shenzhen Branch of China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) announced Thursday.

The line, a breakthrough in China’s maritime communication field, has a high transmission rate and long transmission distance to better meet the actual needs in communication transmission for the convenience of staffers working and living at the oil fields in the east of the South China Sea.

The trunk line runs between Wutong Mountain in Shenzhen and West River 24-3 platform in the South China Sea.

Since 2012, the company has embarked on the overall planning of maritime communication facilities and has now completed seven sea and land trunk lines, and 31 regional branch lines among platforms using microwave communication. It has formed a microwave communication network running through seven offshore oil and gas fields, benefiting Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Huizhou, and greatly improving maritime communication stability.

“The application greatly boosts the transmission capacity and network quality between land and sea. It meets relevant project construction demands, such as the oil field production command center, the remote automatic control system and the unmanned platform,” said Che Yonghui, IT service and telecom manager of S&T Information Department of CNOOC Shenzhen company.

The line is expected to accelerate the oil field digital transformation and intelligent development in the east of the South China Sea.
