City reports 2 new confirmed COVID cases
    2022-01-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN reported two new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases by 8 p.m. yesterday, the city’s health authority said at a press conference held by the city government’s information office last night.

Case 16 is a 24-year-old woman who lives and works in Longgang District. She is Case 2’s colleague and lives in Guangyayuancun, Bantian Subdistrict. She was put under quarantine as a close contact Jan. 7 and was diagnosed as a confirmed case of COVID (common type).

Case 17 is a 21-year-old woman who works and lives in Longgang District and is mainly engaged in receiving and delivering overseas frozen chemical reagents. She lives in Lanyi Village, Baolong Subdistrict. The case was discovered in the third round of nucleic acid screening in Pingshan District on Saturday and was diagnosed as a mild case of COVID-19. The genome sequencing results showed that she was infected with the Omicron variant.

The two cases have been transferred to the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen for treatment and are in stable condition. Their neighborhoods and workplaces have been placed under lockdown, while screening of their close contacts and secondary contacts are under way.

Shenzhen had reported 17 locally transmitted cases since Jan. 7.

The city’s COVID-19 outbreak has been initially brought under control, He Qinghua, a senior official from the National Health Commission, said at a press conference in Beijing on Saturday afternoon.

The Second People’s Hospital of Shenzhen resumed its outpatient services yesterday, though its emergency services have not been resumed. The hospital announced the suspension of outpatient and emergency medical services Wednesday afternoon, as Case 13 had previously been to the hospital for treatment.

As of 9 p.m. yesterday, a total of 16 COVID cases had been reported in the city since Jan. 7. The patients are being treated at a designated hospital and are in stable condition, according to Lin Hancheng, a municipal health commission official.

The Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention completed Case 15’s whole genome sequencing.

The genome sequencing results showed that Case 15 was infected with the Delta variant (AY.103 sublineage) as were Cases 1 to 8, 11 and 13.

Because the viral load in the samples of Cases 9, 10 and 14 was low, the whole genome of these three cases could not be sequenced.

The new COVID cases reported in Shenzhen since Thursday were found among those centrally quarantined as close contacts of the previous confirmed patients, and the local epidemic risk has been initially brought under control, according to the municipal health commission Saturday.

However, the commission urged citizens to stay alert.

“At present, there are still sporadic cases in many parts of the country, and Omicron cases have been reported in some areas. The city’s epidemic prevention and control situation remains severe and complex,” said Lin.

Shenzhen will adjust its nucleic acid testing strategy in light of the epidemic situation, focusing on key areas, locations and risk groups, according to Lin. Free nucleic acid testing will continue to be strengthened in key places.
