SHENZHEN detected one new COVID-19 case during a routine screening of high-risk workers yesterday, bringing the total number of infections in the city’s latest COVID resurgence to 18 as of 5 p.m. yesterday, the local health authority said at a press conference.

Case 18 involves a 32-year-old housekeeper at a hotel where international flight crews stay. The female patient had been under closed-loop management for the last 14 days, according to Lin Hancheng, a municipal health commission official.

From Jan. 1 to 14, the patient’s daily routine nucleic acid test results had all been negative. However, on Jan. 14, she switched shifts and went to a quarantine hotel for centralized medical observation where one nucleic acid test was required every two days.

On Jan. 15, her nucleic acid test was still negative, but when she took a nucleic acid test Monday, it yielded a positive preliminary result. The result, reviewed by the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) early yesterday morning, was also positive. She was diagnosed as a confirmed COVID case (common type).

The patient’s close contacts are her colleagues in closed-loop management. The genome sequencing, epidemiology investigations and source tracing are all under way. Relevant venues have also been put under control and disinfected.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, no new cases related to Cases 1 to 16 that have been reported since Jan. 7, as well as Shenzhen’s first Omicron case (Case 17) reported Sunday, had been found.

The nucleic acid test results for traced close contacts, secondary close contacts, key groups and general contacts involved in Case 17 were negative.

Shenzhen has moderately adjusted its nucleic acid testing measures for outpatient and emergency patients in medical institutions. Sampling locations will be set up near medical institutions to provide convenience for these patients, according to the health commission.

Patients who visit the outpatient department are required to present negative nucleic acid test results obtained within 48 hours, or proof that samples have been taken for a test earlier the same day.

Patients to the emergency, respiratory, otorhinolaryngology and stomatology departments, as well as the endoscopic room, will have to take another nucleic acid test in these medical facilities. First-aid patients should be rescued first before taking the test.

According to the commission, security guards must be present at the entrances and exits of fever clinics. Patients will not be allowed to leave until the nucleic acid test results are acquired.

Shenzhen CDC also reminded citizens to reduce direct contact with parcels’ outer packaging, and to wear masks and gloves, take disinfection measures, and practice good hand hygiene when receiving deliveries.
