A romantic evening with piano music
    2022-05-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

This Friday, local music fans are invited to spend a romantic evening with young pianist Liu Ji. Audience members will hear a chapter from his “Sonata-Fantasy No. 3,” as well as Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op.27, No. 2,” and “Piano Sonata in B-flat Major” by Schubert.

Born in the 1990s, Liu is a creative and versatile artist who combines a multi-faceted career as a pianist, composer and researcher.

He graduated with a doctorate in music from King’s College London. In 2018, Liu was nominated as the “Best Classical Artist of the Year” at the Global Awards in the U.K., which celebrates the stars of music and entertainment. At the Classic Brit Award that year, he was one of the “30 under 30” artists recommended by Apple Music.

His debut solo album “Piano Reflections,” released by Classic FM and distributed by Decca Records in 2014, reached No. 1 on the U.K. Classical Charts and made him the country’s classical breakthrough artist of the year.

His “Sonata-Fantasy No. 3,” an 18-hour-long piece, has been premiered with a live audience and streamed online over a nonstop live performance (certified by Guinness World Record). He composed the piece to mark the unusual year of 2020, when live performances had come to a stop and many musicians were forced to continue their work online.

While many in China attribute a special meaning to the date May 20, which in Chinese pronunciation is equivalent to “I love you,” the program of this concert nicely echoes the romantic theme, performed in the intimacy of the chamber hall on the fifth floor of Shenzhen Concert Hall.

Time: 7:30 p.m., May 20

Tickets: 80-380 yuan

Booking: WeChat account “szyyt_piao”

Venue: Shenzhen Concert Hall, Futian District (福田区深圳音乐厅)

Metro: Line 3 or 4 to Children’s Palace Station (少年宫站), Exit D
