A: I’ve bought an S&P 500 tracker fund. Do you think it’s time to sell? B: If you are a long-term investor, you cannot get too concerned about the many head winds facing the economy today. When you look back in 10 years’ time, the returns will be good. Note: Obviously, wind can come from any direction. When the wind came from behind — i.e., the tail of the ship — it was known as a tailwind. It helped propel the ship forward. However, when the wind came from the front — i.e., the head of the ship — it would propel it back. Literally, the head wind refers to a wind blowing directly against the course of a moving object, such as an aircraft, bird, or runner. As a metaphor, it means “a source of resistance, as to progress or success.” |
