MAJOR floods occurred in South China’s Pearl River basin in the past few days as heavy rain battered the region recently, the Ministry of Water Resources said yesterday. The ministry has raised the emergency response for flood control from level IV to level III to strengthen flood prevention work. Downpours in the Pearl River basin recently have led to the rise of water levels of its main rivers, including the Xijiang, Beijiang, and Hanjiang rivers, according to the ministry. Currently, the two work groups dispatched by the ministry are guiding work on flood prevention and control in Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with level I being the most severe. (Xinhua) |
