SHENZHEN’S transaction volume on e-commerce giant JD.com ranked first among cities in Guangdong Province during this year’s 618 shopping gala, a large online shopping event that wrapped up yesterday, according to data from JD.com.

As of 11:59 p.m. Saturday, the cumulative amount of orders placed during the 618 festival on JD.com in 2022 had exceeded 379.3 billion yuan (US$56.8 billion).

Despite a slowdown in growth and pandemic control measures have caused some delivery disruptions, the almost monthlong shopping frenzy kicked off May 23 and saw the sales on 26 stores break through the 1-billion-yuan mark.

Statistics showed that Guangdong was the country’s top province by consumer purchasing power, and Shenzhen saw the largest transaction volume in Guangdong, followed by Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan and Huizhou.

The top five Guangdong local brands by transaction amount were Midea, Huawei, Gree, Vinda and Vatti, while the top-selling items were home appliances and digital products, computers and cellphones, and food and beverages.

In line with the Central Government’s incentives to boost consumption, JD.com has collaborated with 15 cities to issue vouchers worth over 700 million yuan. Among them, starting May 1, 400 million yuan worth of vouchers were distributed in Shenzhen in four phases to local residents via the JD.com app, which will run through July 10.

Guangdong residents, motivated by vouchers, government subsidies and generous giveaways from the e-commerce platform, were not hesitant to loosen their purse strings during the 618 online promotion period.
