LATIN America is known for its exotic food, music and dances. When these elements meet with local Shekou people, a dance called samba takes on its Shekou style.

During a performance titled “Enjoy Charming Latin Music” held June 18 by Shekou MSCE, the 90-minute mini concert attracted approximately 60 local and expat residents. It became a training and get-together for locals and expats to learn Latin music and dance.

Juca Grajua from Brazil opened the event with an enthusiastic performance of the Chinese classic song “Honey Sweet” with a Latin flavor to it. The audience sang along following the beat of the Surdo drums. Samba dancer Jaqueline Da Silva Juca highlighted the afternoon by inviting the audience to learn samba dance moves, which people joked as Shekou-style samba.

“Today’s event really showed a lot of energy and I felt it really made my day,” said Oksana Liu from Ukraine. Shereka Kim Felix from the Dominican Republic said that she really liked the interaction during the show, where people from various cultures could come together and enjoy the music singing and dancing.

“It is a great opportunity to know a new culture and I would like to have more opportunities to visit such kinds of events,” Tatiana Lis from Belarus said.

The event is part of Shekou MSCE’s Culture Week of Different Countries series.

A platform for local and expat residents to learn from each other, Shekou MSCE had formed eight brands of series activities that are favored by residents over the past years.

The series of activities include Traditional Chinese Festival celebrations, martial arts for Chinese and foreign children, Discover Shenzhen, learning languages, Let’s Sports, legal service seminars, Cultural Week of Different Countries, Foreign-related Knowledge and Etiquette.

“Through the series activities, we hope to create an international harmonious community for both local and expats residents and make it a home away from home for expats and their families where they can work, live happily in the city,” said Yang Yan, director of Shekou MSCE.
