SZ adds 30 public high schools in three years
    2022-07-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN will have opened a total of 30 new general public high schools and added 67,000 general public high school admissions in three years [by the beginning of the fall term], said Zhao Li, deputy director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, in a recent interview.

Shenzhen added 12 general public high schools and 24,000 general public high school places from 2020 to 2021. Another 18 new general public high schools including three high school parks in Longgang, Pingshan and Guangming districts will be put into use this fall to add 43,000 school admissions as scheduled.

General high schools across the city plan to enroll 78,000 students this year including 59,000 admissions at general public high schools, an increase of 12,800 students compared to last year.

Moreover, general high schools’ admission rate this year will exceed 70%, of which general public high schools’ admission rate is expected to reach 53%.

Shenzhen is striving to promote four types of schools, namely science and engineering schools (specializing in math, information technology and biochemical engineering), humanities and social sciences schools (specializing in language and literature and drama and film), art schools (music, dance and painting), and sports schools (specializing in fields such as football, basketball and volleyball), according to a construction scheme on senior high schools.

In addition, Shenzhen encouraged the city’s universities including the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen to set up affiliated schools and introduce prominent school principals across the country and offered opportunities for nonnormal graduates to teach in primary and secondary schools to attract excellent graduates.

So far, there are 14,000 full-time teachers in the city’s senior high schools, with 39.01% of them holding a master’s degree or above. Shenzhen will build a batch of excellent teacher studios by 2025, including 50 at the provincial level, 500 at the municipal level and 1,000 at the district level.
