Deadly Tesla crash under investigation
    2022-11-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

U.S. automaker Tesla Inc. said Sunday it will assist Chinese police investigating a fatal crash involving one of its Model Y sports utility cars earlier this month in South China’s Guangdong Province, while suggesting the incident wasn’t caused by a malfunction.

Domestic media said two people had died and three were injured when the driver lost control of the vehicle in Raoping County in the Nov. 5 accident.

Video circulated on Chinese social media showed a white Model Y speeding until finally crashing. The accident occurred when a Tesla driver surnamed Zhan was parking a Model-Y, which suddenly lost control and travelled at high speed for two kilometers, hitting two motorcycles and two bicycles and causing two deaths and three injuries.

Data taken from the car showed no proof the brake pedal had been applied before the crash, and video showed the brake lights remained off, Tesla said in a statement. Instead, the accelerator was heavily engaged in the lead-up to the accident.

“Police are currently seeking a third party appraisal agency to identify the truth behind this accident and we will actively provide any necessary assistance,” Tesla said.

A verified user on the Chinese Twitter-like platform Weibo, posting under the title of “a family member of the driver,” claimed the driver lost control for the last 2.6 kilometers and though he had tried to apply the brakes, a technical problem must have caused the accident. (SD-Agencies)
