Hotel food poisoning

Health authorities in Sichuan Province said on Monday they had found a huge amount of nitrite* in food samples taken from a hotel in the province where food poisoning killed one diner and sickened 42 others on Friday.

The victims, mostly tourists and hotel staff, suffered vomiting after eating breakfast at the Pearl Garden Hotel in Luding County of the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze. A 47-year-old woman from Guangzhou died in hospital on Friday.

Chemical spill

Ninety people have been sent to hospitals since Saturday in a city in Jiangxi Province after industrial gas leaked out of a chemical plant.

The acid industrial gas burst out from the pipes of a chemical plant in the hi-tech park of Xinyu City at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

SZ Culture Week

Shenzhen Culture Week began in Beijing on Monday and will last until October 20 to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

The week includes an orchestral* concert at Beijing Concert Hall, a fine art exhibition at the National Art Museum of China and a graphic design exhibition at the museum of the School of Fine Arts and Design at Qinghua University.

Tidal surges

Six people are missing after the tide surged* up over a levee* and washed eight people into a river on Sunday in Hangzhou City, East China’s Zhejiang Province.

Around eight people were walking along the levee when the surge swept them into the Qiantang River. The levee on the Qiantang River mouth is well known for its huge tides. (SD-Agencies)
