A battle for affordable food
    2010-11-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    周子然 Roger

The price of school meals is going up day by day, which has triggered a lot of anger among students. We just couldn’t stand it anymore. As a result, we decided to make a stand.

I realized how serious the matter was when I interviewed some of my fellow classmates about studying and living in a new environment. They instantly began to gush out complaints. But among all of the complaints, the horrifying prices at the school cafeteria was the one most mentioned.

“The prices are too high!” one student exclaimed. “The dining business is so lucrative, especially in school,” another student echoed.

Well, to my knowledge, as a student who has been at the school for three-and-a-half years, the price is unacceptable. The cost of lunch has nearly doubled since I was in junior middle school and is a large burden on students who don’t have rich parents.

“The food is revolting, the price is shocking and we, who are at the bottom of the food chain, are suffering! This calls for war,” one extremist in our class cried out.

Unrest grew. Our forces grew stronger and stronger and we put pressure on the school administration.

After considering our request, the cafeteria management agreed not to raise prices further. But to our dismay, the price of food didn’t go down a dime. Soon afterward, our head teacher stamped angrily into our classroom and glared at us, shouting: “Do you know what you have done? Instead of reducing your food price, they’ve doubled ours!”

We burst into laughter. At least we felt better knowing that the cafeteria treated the teachers the same as they treated us.
