    Hi-Tech Fair

    The annual China Hi-Tech Fair opened yesterday at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center and will last until Sunday.

    Delegations from 18 countries will attend the fair while more than 12,000 professionals have signed up for the exhibition, which is expected to attract 85,000 visitors a day.

    

    Games opening

    A boat parade named “Setting Sail” on the Pearl River passing the length of Guangzhou was one of the highlights of the 16th Asian Games opening ceremony held on Friday night to herald the sports spectacle that runs until November 27.

    Premier Wen Jiabao attended the ceremony. The 9.3-km parade involved 46 boats carrying athletes and officials from 45 members of the Olympic Council of Asia.

    

    Tallest building named

    Shenzhen’s tallest building, formerly known as Kingkey Financial Center during its construction, has officially been named Kingkey 100.

    The official name follows a two-month campaign to choose a name, which attracted more than 20,000 suggestions from residents and people from around the country.

    

    High-rise fire

    Fire engulfed a high-rise apartment building under renovation in Shanghai on Monday, killing more than 50 people by yesterday afternoon.

    The fire at the 28-story building, which houses a number of retired teachers, broke out at about 2 p.m., the city government and firefighters at the scene said.

    A witness said building materials caught fire, then spread to scaffolding and then to the building. More than 100 residents were saved by firefighters.
