    29 miners freed

    All 29 workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in Weiyuan, Sichuan Province, have been taken to safety, ending a daylong rescue mission on Monday.

    They emerged from the pit* to the applause of a crowd gathered near the entrance. Rescuers took about an hour between pulling out the first and last worker.

    

    Asiad’s fastest man

    China’s Liu Xiang lit up the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Monday with his long-awaited debut in the 110m hurdles* but it was teammate Lao Yi who stole the show by winning the 100m title.

    Lao powered his way past the rest of the pack in the closing stages of the race to clock 10.24 seconds for the gold, followed closely by Yasir Baalghayth Alnasri from Saudi Arabia and Barakat Al Harthi from Oman.

    

    First IMAX theater

    The UA Cinema Shenzhen, the city’s first IMAX theater, opened on Saturday at KKMALL in Caiwuwei, Luohu District.

    The cinema premiered “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” on Saturday, the same day as the film’s worldwide release. The cinema’s eight halls is capable of seating 1,000 people.

    

    No destructive quakes

    No destructive earthquakes will hit Shenzhen or other areas of Guangdong Province, the Seismological Station of Guangdong said following a minor quake that hit the city on Friday.

    Friday’s quake measured 2.8 on the Richter scale* with the epicenter* at 22.5 degrees north and 113.9 degrees east, at Dananshan Mountain. The quake occurred at a depth of about 23 kilometers.

    No casualties were reported.
