    Games close

China’s biggest sporting spectacle* since the 2008 Olympics closed in Guangzhou on Saturday after 15 days of competitions.

On the last day of action of the Asian Games, China won the last gold when the women’s volleyball team toppled South Korea 3-2 in a thrilling finale. The volleyball success pushed the host nation’s final gold tally* to 199 and its total medals to a whopping* 416 — both Asian Games records.

    Asian Games MVP

Chinese badminton superstar Lin Dan was named the Guangzhou Asian Games most valuable player.

The popular 27-year-old received the award after collecting the highest number of votes from more than 2,000 accredited media attending the Games.

    School stampede

More than 40 children were injured on Monday in a stampede at a primary school in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The accident occurred at No. 5 Primary School in the city of Aksu as school children were rushing outside to a playground around lunchtime when some students in the lead tripped and fell.

    Gold products recalled

Hong Kong jeweler Chow Sang Sang has removed all 18-karat gold products from its 170 mainland stores, after mainland authorities found one of its products to be low in gold content.

The company said the move is aimed at ensuring the quality of all products sold. The quality supervision body said its gold content was lower than that set by the authorities. The jeweler announced on Friday that buyers of 18k gold bracelets will receive a full refund* at any Chow Sang Sang store on the mainland until December 31. (SD-Agencies)
