Asian Para Games open The Chinese delegation are determined to show the spirit, power and fortitude* of Chinese disabled athletes during the first Asian Para Games, which opened in Guangzhou on Sunday night. The Chinese delegation comprised 614 members including 431 athletes and 183 officials, coaches and working staff. It is the biggest disabled athletes delegation China has yet assembled for international multi-sport games. Creative conference The UNESCO Creative Cities Network released a communique* after a four-day 2010 Shenzhen Conference that closed on Thursday. The event drew together about 500 industry insiders, scholars and government officials from 23 cities in 17 countries to share creative ideas. UNESCO's Creative Cities Network is a global platform launched in 2004 that now connects 27 cities, the communique said. The Shenzhen Conference considered the particular role and impact of new media and digital technology on cities and their creative industries. 'Wailing wall' China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave* more names of those massacred* by Japanese aggressors* more than 70 years ago in Nanjing. After extension, the "wailing wall," a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator* Zhu Chengshan said. The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair. Journey of faith A local poet has had his faith in human nature restored after completing a 100-day journey over 283,000 kilometers borrowing money from strangers he met along the way. Setting out from Shenzhen in a SUV on August 25, Liu Meisong, a member of the China Writers Association, visited 30 provinces and municipalities, borrowing more than 50,000 yuan (US$7,506) from 222 people working in different walks of life. |
