Established franchises dominate 2011 cinemas
    2011-01-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow, Harry Potter and Optimus Prime will unleash the movie-pocalypse in 2011. This year represents one of the most ambitious and crowded release slates ever. So what’s in store for 2011? Below is the line-up of worthy titles.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (Nov. 18)

The first part of the series finale from Stephenie Meyer’s books starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Directed by Bill Condon, this tale finds the Quileute and the Volturi closing in on parents-to-be Edward and Bella, whose unborn child poses different threats to the wolves and vampires. Part 2 comes Nov. 16, 2012.

    Transformers: Dark of the Moon

    (July 1)

The third in the director Michael Bay’s franchise, the Autobots Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide, and Sideswipe led by Optimus Prime, are back to take on the evil Decepticons. Stars Shia LaBeouf, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Ken Jeong, Patrick Dempsey and model-turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20)

This fourth installment of the fantasy adventure stars Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, who sets off with Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, on a quest for the elusive fountain of youth, encountering Blackbeard seeking it too, along with his daughter, portrayed by Penelope Cruz. Directed by Rob Marshall this sequel also features Keith Richards as Sparrow’s father.

    Mission: Impossible

    Ghost Protocol (Dec. 16)

The adventures of Ethan Hunt and his IMF team have been in theaters for 14 years, with J.J. Abrams’ “Mission: Impossible III” serving as the last time Hunt slipped on the face mask. That movie, while arguably the franchise’s best, did not ignite the box office the way Paramount hoped. But there’s seemingly still life left in the “Impossible” business, with director Brad Bird taking over the director’s chair, and partnering Tom Cruise.

    Harry Potter and the Deathly

    Hallows Part 2 (July 15)

The dramatic 3D finale of the Harry Potter franchise from the 7th and last of J.K. Rowling’s book series brings on the biggest battle. Stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint as they return to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s final horcruxes. Life for the trio will never be the same again — nor will it be for Potter fans.

    Sherlock Holmes 2 (Dec. 16)

This time, Holmes and Watson trade wits with the fiendish Professor Moriarty. Noomi Rapace plays the female lead, and Stephen Fry takes on the role of Holmes’ smarter, older brother, Mycroft. With Guy Ritchie directing again and the principle leads back in place, “Sherlock Holmes 2” will be at least as quirky and enjoyable as its predecessor.

The Hangover Part 2 (May 26)

“The Hangover” proved to be one of the most popular comedies of recent years. “The Hangover 2” reunites the entire main cast from the first film as they all head to Bangkok for Stu’s wedding. Considering the hijinks these four got up to in Part 1, there’s no telling what mischief will be unleashed overseas. The cameos for this film alone have us intrigued. Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson return, and this time they’re joined by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. That’s an interesting assortment.

    Scream 4 (April 15)

No horror franchise stays dead forever. “Scream” rises from the grave this spring for more stabbing and Hollywood satire. It’s been 10 years since the events of “Scream 3,” and only Neve Campbell’s Sidney, David Arquette’s Dewey and Courtney Cox’s Gale have survived to the present. These three are joined by newcomers Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (May 27)

“Kung Fu Panda 2,” formerly titled “Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom,” is the sequel to the 2008 film. It is set to be in 3D, will be directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, and produced by Guillermo del Toro with most of the original cast, including Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, along with some new characters.

    Cars 2 (June 24)

“Cars 2” is the sequel to the 2006 film. It is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Brad Lewis. It features the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer. It will be presented in Disney Digital 3D, IMAX 3D, RealD 3D and 2D.

    Alvin and the Chipmunks:

    Chip-Wrecked (Dec. 16)

The live-action/CGI family comedy is the third installment to both the 2007 “Alvin and the Chipmunks” film and its 2009 sequel. It will be directed by “Shrek Forever After” director Mike Mitchell. The Chipmunks and The Chipettes get ship-wrecked on the shores of Hawaii.

    Happy Feet 2 (Nov. 18)

“Happy Feet 2” is directed by George Miller. The only other official announcement is that actors Elijah Wood and Robin Williams are to reprise their previous roles of the characters Mumble, Ramon, and Lovelace. Actors Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman who together played Mumble’s parents have yet to confirm any involvement with the film. Singer Pink appears to be the late Brittany Murphy’s replacement and will contribute a song for the film while Brad Pitt and Matt Damon will be the “tiny krill” voices in the film.(SD-Agencies)
