    Students rewarded

    Two students each received a 10,000 yuan (US$1,516) reward last Wednesday for helping an old woman who had tripped* and fallen in Luohu District on January 1. The boys, Zhou Tiancheng and Luo Wei, helped Huang Yuzhen, 78, after she fell and took her to hospital.

    The students’ actions reignited* discussion about helping people in distress following the death of an elderly man who had a fall in a housing estate in Futian and was ignored by people passing by.

    University construction

    The Ministry of Education had approved the construction of South University of Science and Technology of China, the university announced on Sunday.

    The ministry confirmed that the university would be a public institution. The first phase was expected to be completed in 2012.

    Online shops

    More than half of Shenzhen college graduates prefer to support themselves with online shops while waiting for a good job instead of taking a job with a lower salary.

    According to a recent online survey by a group of Shenzhen college students on Xiaonei.com, about 53 percent of Shenzhen college graduates thought operating an online shop was better than low-paid work and more than 45 percent said they would keep their businesses going to support themselves.

    Lunar New Year travel

    About 230 million people in China are expected to travel by rail during the coming Lunar New Year holiday season.

    Wang Zhiguo, the vice minister of railways, told a press conference on Saturday that the number of expected travelers was up 12.5 percent from last year. (SD-Agencies)
