    Wang Yuanyuan

Hong Kong universities are expected to enroll more students from the Chinese mainland in 2011 and the number of mainland students could be increased by 15 to 20 percent at some universities.

A total of 12 Hong Kong universities enrolled mainland students last year and all would enroll again this year, said Liu Ling, an official from the city’s examination and admission office.

Among these, the Hong Kong University of Chinese planned to enroll 300 students from the Chinese mainland this year, 40 more than the number enrolled last year. The Hong Kong Institute of Education expected to enroll 60 to 70 students, about 20 percent more than last year, and the institute expected the number of mainland students would account for* 20 percent of the total number of students in three years, the institute said.

Tuition fees* at some universities will increase this year. The tuition fee for Hong Kong Polytechnic, which planned to enroll 230 mainland students this year, would increase to HK$100,000 a year, HK$20,000 more than last year, while tuition fees for the Institute of Education would increase from HK$75,000 to HK$80,000 this year, the universities’ Web sites said.

Meanwhile, the number of postgraduate students from the Chinese mainland would also be increased this year. Among these, universities such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology planned to increase the number by at least 20 percent compared with last year. Most of these students would be enrolled from Guangdong Province, Shanghai, Beijing and Jiangsu Province.
