SZ migrant dancers

    A hip-hop dance team formed by 15 migrant workers in Shenzhen will perform at this year’s China Central Television (CCTV) Spring Festival Gala, which will be aired on February 2, the Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve, CCTV said on Sunday.

    The team would perform with another grass-root band at the gala held in Beijing, team leader Zheng Jianfeng said.

    Disabled girl

    A teenage girl with a minor mental disability* has been recommended to compete in national swimming qualifiers* for the 2011 Special Olympics in Athens.

    The girl, Fu Xiao, 13, has claimed many awards in the past year, including the 50-meter breaststroke* gold medal at the national Special Olympics in Beijing last year.

    Fu was sent to Shenzhen Yuanping Special Education School by her foster* parents in 2008.

    Emergency calls

    Only about 10 percent of telephone calls to the city’s Emergency Medical Service Center in Futian District were calls for emergency help, according to the center.

    The center received an average of about 1,000 calls a day, but most were from children calling 120 for fun or callers canceling earlier calls, said Zhang Fulin, director of the center.

    Fireworks plant blast

    At least six were killed and 22 others injured in a fireworks plant explosion last Wednesday in Henan Province.

    The blast ripped through* Yutian Fireworks Plant in Yancheng District, Luohe City, at about 4:50 p.m., said a spokesman with the district’s publicity department.
