    Sundance Film Festival

    The 27th Sundance Film Festival opened last week aiming to defy* the economic slowdown* by screening a “bigger than ever” selection of independent movies from the United States and around the world. The 10-day festival, which opened on Thursday in Utah will show nearly 120 films from 29 countries.

   

    Selina released from hospital

    After 89 days of intensive* care in hospital, pop singer Selina of Taiwan’s popular girls band S.H.E. told the media she was going home last Wednesday. At the 20-minute press conference, Selina, wearing short hair, shed tears, gave thanks, but most of the time, kept a bright smile on her face. The 28-year-old singer sustained third degree burns to 54 percent of her body while shooting an explosion* scene in Shanghai three months ago.

   

    Faye Wong concerts

    Pop diva Faye Wong finally returned to the Taipei Arena for her three-day tour from Friday.

    Wong performed her greatest hits in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000 that included other artists like Na Ying, Zhao Wei, Fish Leong and Carina Lau.

   

    Natalie Portman comedy

    Hollywood star Natalie Portman, already riding high during the awards season with “Black Swan,” took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office on Sunday.

    “No Strings Attached,” in which she co-stars with Ashton Kutcher, sold about US$20.3 million worth of tickets across the United States and Canada during the three days beginning on January 21.
