Enriching your weekend (II)
    2011-01-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Dear fellow students,

As England is dotted with many towns within a county, no matter where your school is located, you are not far from a neighboring area where you can shop, dine or see a film. Indeed, I find the many small shops in a town extremely exciting and the vintage feel of the countryside can be quite a surprise.

There are so many creative goods out there, and they are often not expensive. Even if you choose not to spend any money, you can take these shopping hours as a relaxing break from school routine.

I have found it extremely entertaining to stay overnight with local students in their homes over the weekend. Many English students at highly selective private schools live in mansions or big houses in the English countryside, some of which are of great historical interest. You get to see houses with long history and also get to explore the local community and meet new people in the quiet and friendly country areas. It is a great way to immerse yourself in the English culture and its history.

If you have two or three nights’ break, plan for a full-day trip with friends to London, where you have abundant opportunities for entertainment, dining, shopping, and above all, visiting museums and galleries.

There are many museums in London, as I am sure you are aware. I am equally fascinated by the many art galleries. There is a vast heritage to explore and you can really take your time to appreciate the great treasures out there.

Of course, shopping in London in itself is an interesting experience. Although you do not have to spend a big sum of money to actually buy things, you still have an opportunity to appreciate many creative products and fashions through window displays.

London truly is a world-class city and one will find something new on every trip there. London is easily accessible from anywhere in the country, by train or by bus, and is an exciting place for young students like us.

Remember, the worst way to spend your weekend is to sleep in your dorm from day to night. You need to have a life outside of school, or if you are in school, make good use of your time. Give your mind and body a break by enjoying your weekends to the full.

    Yours fondly,

    Susan M B Chen
