Golden Broom to sweep off flops

GET ready to boo the worst Chinese movies in 2010.

When the annual Golden Raspberry Awards for the worst U.S. movies during the past year announced the nominations early this week, Golden Broom, China’s equivalent to the Razzies, also revealed the nominations at the same time.

The awards, in their second year, are decided according to votes from independent movie critics and netizens. Final results will be announced at the end of next month, said Cheng Qingsong, editor-in-chief of Youth Movie Handbook, the organizer.

Although the Chinese box office raked in 10.2 billion yuan (US$1.55 billion) in 2010, more and more audiences are not satisfied with some lavish productions with pale content. More than 20 movies were nominated for the “most disappointing movie,” including big hits such as “If You Are the One II,” “Sacrifice,” “Under the Hawthorn Tree” and “Confucius.”

Renowned directors are also on the list for the “most disappointing director,” including the three most popular directors in China — Feng Xiaogang, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou.

Zhang has been on the list for two years in a row. Last year, his periodical comedy “A Simple Noodle Story” were the biggest winners of the awards, taking home “brooms” for the “most disappointing movie,” the “most disappointing director” and the “most disappointing actor.”

According to netizens, Zhang’s Cultural Revolution romance “Under the Hawthorn Tree” lost the spirit and soul of the original novel and Chen’s ancient revenge thriller “Sacrifice” had a poor ending, while romance “If You Are the One II” was loose in structure and plot.

The “most disappointing actor” last year, Xiao Shenyang, was on top of the list again this year for a poor performance in the ancient comedy “Just Call Me Nobody,” followed by Chinese TV host, He Jiong, and other actors such as Huang Xiaoming, Liu Ye and Guo Degang.

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu was nominated “most disappointing actress” for her performances in “Future X-Cops,” action flick “Reign of Assassins” and comedy

“Adventure of the King.” The other nominees included TV presenter Xie Na and Hong Kong actress Shu Qi and Chinese actress/director Xu Jinglei.

This year’s Golden Broom Awards also add the “most disappointing movie for heavy product placement” and the “most disappointing sequel.” Comedies “Flirting Scholar II,” “Just Another Pandora’s Box” and “My Sassy Girl II” are on the list for disappointing sequels, while “If You Are the One II,” “Go, Lala, Go,” “Love Is the Last Word,” “Wind Blast” and “Aftershock” took the leading places on the list for heavy product placement.

Last year, apart from “A Simple Noodle Story,” Lu Chuan’s Nanjing Massacre movie “City of Life and Death” and Kevin Chu’s “The Treasure Hunter” also snatched the “most disappointing movie.” Taiwan model-turned-actress won the “most disappointing actress” for her performance in “The Treasure Hunter.”

“Although some movies attracted a lot of attention, they lost the true meaning of making movies and audiences even felt cheated. However, there is no compensation or refunds for a disappointing movie, so we founded an award like this to speak out and express our thoughts in a humorous and entertaining way,” Cheng said.

    In Cheng’s opinion,

the awards are not for fun. “It is a professional and fair competition and we hope to help moviemakers improve through this. Although they won’t attend the presentation ceremony, we will still send the trophy [a golden broom] and certificates to the winners,” he said.

Cheng joked that since the Golden Broom Awards are normally announced around the Spring Festival, it’s a coincidence the awards come at the same time as the Chinese tradition of sweeping out the old to welcome a new year. “To sweep off the worst movies of the past years, we hope to see more good movies in the coming year.”(Wang Yuanyuan)
