12 volunteers to teach in Xinjiang
    2011-02-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Wang Yuanyuan

A group of 12 volunteer* teachers from Shenzhen would start to teaching in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the city Education Bureau said on Friday.

They are the 7th group of volunteer teachers Shenzhen has sent to Xinjiang. They will leave Shenzhen today and teach at primary and middle schools in Kashi City and Ta County for one year, said Guo Yurong, director of the bureau.

The teachers, including three women and nine men, were all chosen from city primary and middle schools. Their average age was 39.3 and seven have won many awards for teaching.

Apart from teaching, they will also help train local teachers and conduct academic research and involve themselves in school management, Guo said.

“Ta County is more than 4,000 meters above sea level and will be a challenge for me and other teachers, but we are fully prepared,” said Zhang Ling, one of the teachers.

According to the bureau, Shenzhen started sending volunteer teachers to Kashi City and Ta County in May last year and they were warmly welcomed by schools and students.

The city also donated money to build the Kashi No. 18 Primary School last year. The school would be finished and opened this year. Shenzhen would help the two areas promote bilingual education.

The city would also build the Shenka Education Central Park in Kashi, the bureau said.
