Qingdao man films Olympics history
    2011-03-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A QINGDAO resident, Jiang Maosen, plans to make a 50-episode documentary of “the History of Qingdao Olympics” before 2012, when the Games will be held in London, in the hope of letting more people know about the efforts Qingdao has made for the Olympics.

As the first man in China to bring up the concept of “history of the Qingdao Olympics,” Jiang classified his historical research as “Qingdao Olympics historical research.” “I think Qingdao is one of the earliest cities in China to have relationship with the Games. The history can be traced back to 1932. Therefore, Qingdao had 79 years of history of involving in Olympics Games,” he said.

The long-distance runner Liu Changchun attended the 10th Olympics in Los Angeles in 1932, which was the first time China sent athletes to the Games, but few people know that coach of the Chinese delegation Song Junfu was actually the dean of the sports department at Qingdao University (the current Shandong University). In 1933, Song built the Qingdao Stadium on Wendeng Road according to a draft design of the Log Angeles Stadium, Jiang said. Other famous Chinese involving in Olympics including Wang Zhengting, Kong Xiangxi, Zhang Boling and Hao Gengsheng also had close relationship with Qingdao.

Mao has started collecting information about the city’s Olympics history for years and finished a draft manuscript with more than 200,000 words about the history in 2008. In 2009, he donated his works and famous athletes’ autographs to the Olympics Sailing Museum.

Jiang has been filming the documentary since 2010. During the past year, he’s interviewed 21 famous athletes and coaches such as Yin Jian, Qiao Yunping, Jiang Xintian, Xiao Yong and Xu Dianping. He now has more than 20 tapes of video documents, which can make a 20-episode documentary. (Wang Yuanyuan)
