    Corruption biggest threat: Wen

    Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday that of all threats posed to China, corruption* is the most serious. And that China must seek political reform under the leadership of the Party.

    “Without political reform, economic reform cannot succeed and the achievements we have made may be wasted,” Wen told a press conference after the conclusion of the annual parliamentary session on Monday.

    

    Torchbearer selection

    A nationwide selection of the 900 torchbearers for Shenzhen Universiade kicked off on Monday at Shenzhen University. College students are invited to log on to www.iCoke.cn to apply to be torchbearers for the Games.

    

    China’s assistance

    A chartered plane carrying the first batch of relief goods China committed to Japan’s earthquake rescue operations took off from Shanghai on Monday afternoon.

    China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday that China will provide 30 million yuan worth of emergency humanitarian assistance to Japan.

    

    Yingjiang children back to school

    Yingjiang was on alert on Monday for secondary disasters as children returned to school, four days after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted the county in Yunnan Province.

    About 75 percent of the county’s 31,141 primary and junior high school students went back to school on Monday.
